Wiki about the history of the Willighagen name. Previous work at willighagen.nl (Q107) showed a history of all currently living Willighagens starting with Jannes Willighagen (Q10) born in 1772 in Duur just north of Olst (Q29). But the history of the name goes deeper, farther. The oldest reference to the name seems to be from 1601 when fields near Olst where referred to as Willichaegen (fields) (Q283).
And boy, is this history fascinating! For example, did you already know that:
- Aeltjen (Q9) was born in 1660 and Hendrick (Q8) born in Herxen in 1662 and son of Harmen Willighagen (Q6)?
- or Gerrit Willighagen (Q66) was born before 1707, first referred to Gerrit Jansen op de Willighage in 1717, father of 5 children baptised in Windesheim (Q17)?
- or Antonij Willighagen (Q22) who got married in 1730 with Eva Jansen Calevelts (Q197) and lived in Zwolle (Q44) and lived or worked at the Mars (Q23) farm?
- another Jannes Willighagen (Q70) (one of these six from the 18th century) born in 1726 in Herxen and was son of Gerrit Willighagen (Q66) (1707), and actually the second Jannes (Q68) in the family?
- or Pieter Willighagen (Q92) born in 1786 (and died in Napoleon's army in Smolensk in 1812) and son of Jean Alberts Willighagen (Q94) who lived around Steenwijk before he moved to Hoorn?
We are greatly indebted to the hard work of the volunteers of Van papier naar digitaal (Q19), which allowed us to find new Willighagens.
We also found that there seem to be at least 3 farms sharing the Willighagen family name:
- the Willighage (Q85) in Herxen, and
- the Willighagen (Q58) (aka de Willighagen I and the Wilghagen) in Duur (next to Willichaegen (fields) (Q283), and
- de Willighagen II (Q99) just south of the Olst town center, which originates from the fields of Stift Essen.
A fourth farm seems to have an important role in the history of early Willighagens:
- the Mars (Q23) just south of Zwolle
